dealing with poster presentation guide
- focuses on
- layout of poster
- what you should do
- reminder
- there is an md course that taught this
- therei s a template that you have to use
- there is an FAQ in moodle that asks
- are we allowed to experiment and change the template?
- his comment? sure but be careful
- because think of the examiners
- they have to have to look at your presentation and try to measure one against the other
- and you will know (from previous course) about doing E-posters
- why are we not using E-posters? that was originally the idea, but the course coordinator is not the only person in charge
- other people make decision
- and when you have such variation in poster, it's hard to "judge"
- so standaerdized the ideal solution
- you will know about E-posters, you dont have to worry aobut the amount of material, you can put in as many content
- posters are LIMITED, because it's a paper poster, and you're presenting it as is
- basic structure and things to make sure in poster, then other things
- title of your project/study
- some might have a really long title, that's a problem, make sure that what you're looking at actually matches the title of your project
- e.g diabetes in oman, dont have the title "wwhat a wonderful world"
- you want the title to be RELEVANT, specially if you have a long title for the project
- name and ID
- you will be stunned over how many students FORGET this
- AIM and Specific objectives
- remember, because you dont have much space, you want to make this very clear
- so that the person reads ait and undnerstands what you want to do
- if that's not clear? the rest doesnt follow
- lay it out iin simple terms for anyone to read and understand
- you answer the next question, why?
- why is what you're doing important?
- you have to have a conviction yourself in your heart, why this matters
- why should i sit and listen to your presentation. i got my phone and i could check that right now?
- for both who is listeningn and reading your poster
- notice how the dr is highlighting each part with a read square when he's talking about it
- instead of pointing it with a laser, use a red square to highlight the section
- very simple animation, when you want you draw the attention of the viewers to just 1 area on the poster
- now you established aim and why, you've hooked the audience,
- arrow pointing at aim and specific, go back to it again and see if it matches
- sometimes you have a good aim and its clear in your mind, but then you forget
- so go back to the aim
- everything that im writing, does it refer to the aim? does it fulfill the function of the aim? because it would be a waste if not
- does justification match aim?
- background
- what do we arleady know about the topic?
- because you have limited space
- the idea is not to show that you read so many articles, but make it clear andn straight to the point about this topic?
- because when you get to the end of it
- you have to explain the GAP, what do we NOT KNOW?
- START broad
- e.g obesity in oman, talk about obesity in general, then narrow down
- or from ad ifferent perspective, general lifestyle sdiseases in oman
- start general, then go narrow, and here is something we dont know
- methodology
- straightfoward
- what did you actually do that would help us answer the question?
- limited space, you did alot of work that you want to show, but you cant show everything
- SHOW the MOST IMPORTANT THINGS
- results
- this is the tough decision
- you'll find out alot, and you have all these charts and diagrams
- you have to CHOOSE the best discovery
- there is alot of space for this
- how many diagrams are wea llowed in?
- there is no limit, just make sure it's READABLE comfortably
- what color to use?
- which size/font to use?
CAN THE AUDIENCE READ IT AND SEE WHAT'S GOING ON?
- YOU'LL find generally
- more than 1 table or chart, you will be be struggling
- so limit youself to that, because it's simply difficult to squeeze in everything
- after you've done it, go back to the justification, then go back the to the aim
- is what im writing down, IS IT RELEVANT TO WHAT IM TRYING TO DO?
- is it answering the question? to finding the gap?
- then
- then once you do all that, try to summarize
- you are allowed a very very small font for references
you get through all of this, you have the poster setup and did the presentation
- dr showed how to present
- assesment and things to look for
- part 2; quality of the poster
- part 3 communication
there used tot be old grading system
- not used anymore, but it's kept there because it's a useful checklist
when you go the sumary, maybe its agood ideae to go back to aim objective
