neoplasia → new growth
neo is new
plasia → growth
neoplasia arises in a background of genetic abnormality (molecular abnormality)
when the neoplasia forms a tumor, it is “neoplasm”
- collection of cells and stroma composing new growths are referred to as neoplasm
- can be
- epithelial
- mesenchymal cells
if it arises in epithelial:
- benign
- malignant
- grow as flat (without forming mass) → dysplasia
- sometimes, form a tumor (benign or malignangt)
- adenoma of colon
- adenoma of any gastric GI lining
mesenchymal
- either will form a mass
- benign or malignant
- lipoma
- no flat mass like in epitherlial
tumor
originally → swelling caused by inflammation
but it can be used to mean neoplasm
