neoplasia → new growth

neo is new

plasia → growth

neoplasia arises in a background of genetic abnormality (molecular abnormality)

when the neoplasia forms a tumor, it is “neoplasm”

• collection of cells and stroma composing new growths are referred to as neoplasm
  • can be
    • epithelial
    • mesenchymal cells

if it arises in epithelial:

• benign
• malignant
• grow as flat (without forming mass) → dysplasia
• sometimes, form a tumor (benign or malignangt)
  • adenoma of colon
  • adenoma of any gastric GI lining

mesenchymal

• either will form a mass
  • benign or malignant
  • lipoma
    • liposarcoma (malignant)
• no flat mass like in epitherlial

tumor

originally → swelling caused by inflammation

but it can be used to mean neoplasm
