methods to receive samples:
- pneumatic system
- usually for any sample received from the main hospital building
- medical orderly (delivered by a person)
- from other hospital sections not connected to the main building
- other hospitals that work with SQUH biochem lab
capsule:
- biochemistry is blue color (pathology is green, microbiology is yellow, hematology is red)
sample label:
- patient name, age, MRN
- urgency
- barcode (episode number/sample id)
- test requested
tube types:
- RED → plain tube
- types according to age:
- 7ml
- 5ml
- pediatric (very tiny)
- sticker comes separately alongside instead of being attached because small tube
- heparinized syringe
- collected from artery\vein of an adult to see blood gasses
- for a pediatric, a capillary tube is used instead
- collection time requirement:
- <30 minutes for pneumatic system
- <1h WITH ICE for medical orderly
- note: this information only appears if the nurse updated the sample on trak care
- in the case it is not, CALL THEM
- NOTE 2: only collection time of this test matters (for us), the collection time of other tubes differ according to the type of test requested.
- Green → sodium heparin or lithium heparin
- grey → oxalate fluoride (anticoagulant + inhibit glycolysis)
- purple → EDTA
- majority of the tests done by EDTA involve WHOLE BLOOD
